Sour Cream, Anyone?

This reminds me of a story.  Of course.  It was my first experience with yogurt – years and years ago.  My grandmother had bought some and sent it over for us to try.  It wasn’t flavored; it was just plain yogurt.  Mom had put it in a bowl on the table and asked if anyone wanted to try it.  I think she and Dad were afraid to be the first.  It looked good, all creamy and white.  My younger brother, Lee, agreed to be the guinea pig.  Lee ate anything.  And everything.  Remember Mikey, on the cereal commercial?  “He won’t eat it; he hates everything.”  Lee was the opposite of Mikey.  Lee’s first word was, “eat.”  Seriously.  And he did!! But he also had a lot of energy and was always moving – even in his sleep – so I guess he needed lots of fuel.

Anyway – he took a taste, made a “yummy face,” (not quite as goofy as the “pudding face”) and said, “It’s pretty good.”  So I took a taste, expecting something like a cross between cream cheese and whipped cream.  Gross.  It was thoroughly disgusting.  I mean, have you ever eaten plain yogurt?  Totally punked by my little brother.  Everyone got a good laugh, and my respect for my brother’s “poker face” went up 100%.  I guess he was getting even for all the years I picked on him.  The dog got the rest of the yogurt, and he loved it.  He even tried to eat the container.

Recently Wesley talked me into buying some overpriced Greek yogurt.  Apparently everyone at the store is buying it.  Again – gross.  It reminded me of my first yogurt, and I think it’s a little chalky.  I wonder if everyone’s buying it as a status symbol or something.  You can get 6 containers of the store brand for the price of one of the chalky Greek ones – and I like the store brand better.  Even the stuff Jamie Lee Curtis hawks isn’t as good as the creamy stuff.  I guess I’m more French than Greek, at least when it comes to yogurt.

So looking back, that yogurt of long ago kind of reminded me of sour cream.  Great on potatoes and with salsa and chips, but kind of disgusting alone.  But this little guy is kind of cute.

We’ve made these for years, I know, but several of these were featured in the recent Stampin’ Success magazine, so I thought I’d make one or two.  They’re so easy, and I wanted to use some of the Spice Cake fabric and the ginormous buttons from the Spice Cake suite in the Holiday mini catalog.

Here’s how you make these.  I started with a quarter sheet of card stock (4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″).  Decorate however you want – I stamped mine, then sent it through the Big Shot in an embossing folder.  Add a line of sticky strip along the long side and halfway across the bottom, peel off the backing and squeeze together.  You now have a little “envelope” type package, sealed along the bottom and one side. If you want, you can add a couple turns with the crimper at the bottom.

Now – the fun part – fill it with something.  I’ve put little stamps in mine, or you can add candy (always a good choice).  Some candy corn or the little pumpkins (pure sugar, but it’s only once a year, right??) or chocolate nuggets or other wrapped candy would be yummy.   Jewelry also fits.  After you get it filled about 2/3 or so from the top, squeeze the opposite sides at the top together – the side with the “seam,” and the other side – so it’s twisted like a sour cream container from the fast food place.  Seal it – I used a glimmer brad so you don’t have to destroy it to open it – and that’s really all you need to do.  I tied a strip of fabric around it, and added the button to cover the “legs” on the brad.  Wouldn’t these make cute little party favors or place cards at your holiday gatherings?  You could even have everyone write something they’re thankful for and put copies in everyone’s container for Thanksgiving.
